Joe Biden went to Theranos and called Elizabeth Holmes “inspiring”

President Joe Biden is one of the politicians who has fallen prey to Theranos and its creator Elizabeth Holmes, a former Silicon Valley star who was convicted of cheating investors on Monday.

In 2015, then-Vice President Joe Biden paid a visit to Theranos’ California headquarters, where he sat in a roundtable with the company’s turtlenecked founder and dubbed the facility the “laboratory of the future.”

According to a Theranos press statement issued following the visit, Biden exclaimed, “Talk about being motivated.” “This is a source of inspiration.” What you’ve accomplished is incredible to me, Elizabeth.”

Biden’s visit occurred just months after the Wall Street Journal published an exposé alleging that Holmes had deceived investors and patients about its blood-testing technology. The business, which was once valued at $9 billion, was dissolved in 2018, and Holmes was found guilty on Monday of three counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy.

However, before Holmes’ nonsense was exposed, Biden stated that Theranos was seen as the future of medicine by the Obama administration.

“This is the future laboratory,” Biden declared.

“This is the future laboratory,” Biden declared. “What impresses me the most is that you’re not only making these lab tests more accessible, but you’re also charging historically low prices, which are a fraction of what they are now while maintaining the highest standards, and empowering people, whether they live in the barrio or a mansion, by empowering them to help take control of their own health.”

Biden reportedly told Holmes that he and then-President Barack Obama “share your vision of a prevention-focused health-care paradigm.”

The visit was documented in comprehensive tweets by both the vice president’s office and Theranos, which were recently found by the Washington Examiner.

Biden wasn’t the only important figure that backed Theranos. Former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and George Shultz, former Defense Secretaries James Mattis and William Perry, and former Senators Bill Frist and Sam Nunn were among the company’s board members.

The Walton family, who founded Walmart, the billionaire DeVos family, which includes Trump administration education secretary Betsy DeVos, and Rupert Murdoch, who owns the parent company of The Post and The Wall Street Journal, are among the other notable investors in Theranos.

Prior to the Journal exposé, Holmes was widely praised by the media, with his face appearing on the covers of publications such as Fortune, Forbes, and Inc.

The White House’s YouTube page aired a brief video of Holmes talking about her work “empowering women in science, technology, mathematics, and business, as well as working on advancements in global health” shortly after Biden’s visit.

According to an invitation discovered by the Washington Examiner, Holmes was also invited to a 2015 White House luncheon in honor of Japan’s prime minister.

On Monday, Holmes was convicted of fraud.
Some investors were defrauded by Holmes when she told them Theranos’ blood testing technology was going to be great. Besides, the jury also found her not guilty of three more fraud charges, but didn’t decide on three more.

For each of the four charges, Holmes could get up to 20 years in prison. Most court-watchers think her sentence will be a lot less.

Later this year, Ramesh “Sonny” Balwani, Holmes’ ex-boyfriend and number two at Theranos, will be tried on the same charges as Holmes. He will be tried separately.
