Walt Disney Pictures produced the film along with Lucamar Productions, Marc Platt Productions. The music is given by Alan Menken (score and songs), Howard Ashman (classic songs), Lin-Manuel Miranda (new songs). Walt Disney Studios, Motion Pictures distribute the film.
It is a live-action adaptation of 1989, an animated film of the same name. The stars of the film include Halle Bailey, Javier Bardem, Melissa McCarthy, Jonah Hauer-King. The voice roles include Awkwafina, Daveed Diggs, Jacob Tremblay.

On May 25, 2016, it was announced that the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid is in the development stage. It was announced on August 16, 2016, Lin-Manuel Miranda, along with Marc Platt, will produce the film. On December 6, 2017, it was announced that Rob Marshall was in talks for directing the film while Jane Goldman for the screenplay. Rob revealed that he and John DeLuca and Marc Platt were hired to develop the film. In December, Rob was officially hired as the director of the film.
On June 28, 2019, Melissa McCarthy was in talks to be a part of the film. Next month Awkwafina, Daveed Diggs, Jacob Tremblay joined the cast. Actress Emily Coates joined the film in October 2020. Principal photography was supposed to begin in April 2020 in London but got delayed due to a pandemic. In December 2020, it was announced by the makers that they are hoping that filming would start in January 2021, and in January, it was again announced that filming had begun.
On March 17, 2017, it was announced that Alan Menken would return as the film’s composer and write new songs and Lin-Manuel Miranda. On May 20, 2019, Menken shared this film would be the next project. Till now, no update on the release date by the makers. The audience will have to wait till further announcements are made.
